The C.L.R. James Institute

Special Event:
Researching Hubert Harrison:
An Evening with Jeff Perry

Dear Friend,

You are invited to a special event here at the Institute. "Researching Hubert Harrison: An Evening with Jeff Perry," Wednesday, May 30, 2001, 6-8 pm. Jeff Perry is a trade union official, Fellow of the James Institute, and independent researcher who has spent many years excavating the life and work of Hubert Harrison, "the father of Harlem radicalism." Jeff has written a two volume scholarly biography, which will be published next year, but this month his edited volume A Hubert Harrison Reader is hitting the bookstores. This is a chunky volume of Harrison's writings which Jeff has selected. You can read a description of his book on our site, or go directly to the description at the publisher's web site.

Jeff is hitting the stores also: he has gigs all over town this spring, at Barnes and Noble (Greenwich Village), Brecht Forum, Tamiment Library, Queens College Labor Forum, and Labyrinth Books. Info on these gigs is available here at our site, or will be very shortly. What is special about the event here at the Institute is that instead of reading from the book and talking about Harrison, Jeff has agreed to discuss his experiences as a Harrison researcher over the years. Jeff has produced his work outside the formal institutions of intellectual production in this society.

He will have copies of the book to sell and sign. On that Wednesday evening, please come around 6 pm. We will have some wine and cheese refreshments but you are welcome to bring something to drink. Jeff will speak at 6:30 sharp and then answer questions. As usual at Institute events, people who wish to stay for a reception and tasty takeout food will be welcome to do so.

Because space is limited, we request that you let us know if you plan to attend. Please email or phone by Sunday night, May 27. (This is the first time we have announced an event on the web site and have to request your cooperation in the experiment. It is possible that some people will have to be told the event is fully booked.) Again, for more on the book: see our book announcement. To RSVP for this gig, contact : Jim Murray. Soon we will put up directions to the Institute on the site.
